Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is currently making her way through Australia and Fiji on her royal tour with Prince Harry. From charitable events, athletic competitions, and meet-and-greets, the royal couple has been very busy with their public engagements.
On October 23, Markle gave her first official speech on the tour and discussed the importance of education. She told the audience that she knew first hand how difficult it can be to afford higher education, and claimed she paid for her time at Northwestern University through work-study programs and financial aid.
“It was through scholarships, financial aid programs and work-study where my earnings from a job on campus went directly towards my tuition, that I was able to attend university. And, without question, it was worth every effort,” Markle said.

However, her half-sister, Samantha Markle took to Twitter to accuse the Duchess of lying. “Dad paid her college tuition! She forgot the most important part of her speech and there are receipts to prove it,” she reportedly wrote, adding “I love my sister but this is ridiculous. You can’t lie like this, Meg! Delusionally absurd.”
Before the royal wedding in May, Meghan Markle's half-brother told the Daily Mail that their father paid for her tuition after he won $750,000 in the lottery. Thomas Markle confirmed that sentiment with the publication as well.
So who really paid for the Duchess' education? The public is waiting for those receipts.
