The movement to ban the sale of animal furs has jumped from a fashion choice to a city ordinance. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to make selling fur illegal by January 2019.
"The sale of fur products in San Francisco is inconsistent with the City's ethos of treating all living beings, humans and animals alike, with kindness," said San Francisco district supervisor Katy Tang in a press release. San Francisco is the third US city to go fur-free, after Berkeley and West Hollywood. Internationally, São Paulo, Brazil and much of India have made it illegal as well.
"San Francisco has today put itself on the map as a world-leading city in kind, progressive law making," CEO of Human Society International, Kitty Block, said in a statement. "Let's see this ban replicated in cities, states and countries across the world."
While this litigation has floated through governmental bodies around the country for a while, it is rare for the animal rights ordinance to pass. Anti-fur activists in San Francisco and around the country are rejoicing at this momentous legal action.
