When it comes to social media, many users are putting their best face forward. But when it comes to pregnancy, are women getting unrealistic body expectations from the images they see?

Dr. Katrin Tiidenberg from Aarhus University, in Denmark, spent a year studying maternity photos on Instagram. She found that there was a commonality between a majority of the images displayed, perfect shape and correct curves, even when pregnant. "The female body is sexualized as it is ordinarily. The discourse kind of frames it as, if you don't have it then it's your own fault," she said according to AJ+

The average pregnant body gains 25-35 lbs, and there are a wealth of side effects and appearance changes that can appear less than glamorous. Tiidenburg continues to explain that many women are left out of the images you see on Instagram. "There's a very limited range of prepackaged maternal identities, and those are racialized and classed," she said.

Of course, not every woman feels this way about maternity pictures, and often it is a way to celebrate your bodies changes. However, as with any images seen online, constant comparisons can lead to a negative self-image.
