LIFESTYLE Art

Art is not just for Instagram. A phrase that in writing seems obvious or overstated, but in practice appears to be forgotten entirely. Since the unveiling of the Obama's presidential portraits at US National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., thousands have flocked to see the iconic portrayal. However, "see" may not be the correct word.

“Please take your photos as quickly as possible, and you can look it up online. Everything is online,” the museum guards continuously instruct the sea of cell phone users, according to Quartzy.

The museum has even created a line just for photo-takers as a way to expedite the process. Once at the front, people did any or all of the following: take a photo of the painting, turn for a selfie, or pose next to the portrait.

In a way, it is individuals taking art and giving their own personal response to it. Dr Kylie Budge, a senior research fellow at Western Sydney University said, “There’s an element of co-creation involved. With platforms like Instagram available, the person experiencing the art now has the capacity to respond and create something instantly that communicates their reaction.”

Has social media completely changed the way human's view and understand art? While the scope of an artist's reach has exponentially expanded through art photography, could the meaning be lost in the hashtags?
