In 2017, the presenters of the award, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, announced 'La La Land' as the winner when they were supposed to call 'Moonlight.' The excited stars and producers who had rushed the stage had to sit back down when the mistake was realized—it was awkward.

“This year, when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away,” Kimmel joked during his opening monologue. “Give us a minute.”

Hollywood best friends Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone were sitting next to each other in the audience. Stone, who was the lead actress in 'La La Land' was definitely who the joke was aimed at.
