CELEBRITY Chance the Rapper

Chance the Rapper has been a longtime advocate for underprivileged education in Chicago. The Grammy-winning artist came to a local city council meeting to try to convince the politicians to allocate their funds differently.

"You guys have a lot of power. That's the reason I showed up here at 8 am," Chance the Rapper said, according to NowThis.

The meeting was held because the Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, wanted the city council to approve a $95 million budget for a new police academy. However, Chance the Rapper believed that the money could be put to better use.

"There's a lot of different services that need to be funded. Obviously, schooling is my big thing. But there's a lot of ways to transform the city that don't have anything to do with police training," he said.

Despite the rappers impassioned speech, the council voted 48-1 to go through with the approval of the state of the art police academy. "It will be an investment in the kind of economic activity we want to see," Mayor Emanuel said.

Chance the Rapper continues to devote his nonprofit, as well as his personal finances, to better serve Chicago's youth.
