Amy Adams is working to call attention to financial struggles on the ground floor, rather than those in Hollywood. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, the Golden Globe-award winning actor explained why she has been relatively silent amidst conversations about the pay gap in the entertainment industry.

“Everyone wanted me to talk about how I felt about it, but I want to fight for people outside our industry, so to come out and look ungrateful about what I’m paid as an actress just didn’t feel right,” Adams said. She continued to explain that, “I do believe in equal pay, but let’s start with our teachers. Let’s get waiters paid the minimum wage. That’s what’s great about what’s happening with Time’s Up—we’re starting to have bigger conversations than just about what’s happening in Hollywood."

Adams was making headlines for her part in the gender equality debate during the 2015 Sony data hack. One controversial piece of information to be released was that both Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were paid less then their male counterparts in 'American Hustle.'

In an interview with GQ, Adams explained that, “The truth is we hire people to negotiate on our behalf, men and women… I knew I was being paid less and I still agreed to do it because the option comes down to do it or don’t do it. So you just have to decide if it’s worth it for you. It doesn’t mean I liked it.”

When it comes to gender and wage equality, change is in the process of being made at every level. While there may be more news about negotiating over millions, Adams is doing her part to remind people about where change may be needed most.
