CELEBRITY Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart was recently forced to step down as Oscars host for 2019 after his past homophobic tweets resurfaced. He refused to apologize, claiming that he had already done so and left all of that in his past, but he still lost the job and proceeded to apologize on Twitter. Now, Nick Cannon is jumping to his defense by digging up other comedians' past homophobic tweets.

Cannon's main line of defense involved calling out three major female comedians: Amy Schumer, Chelsea Handler, and Sarah Silverman.

He first shared a tweet from Chelsea Handler from 2010 which read, "This is what a f*g bird [looks] like when he flexes," and commented, "Interesting. I wonder if there was any backlash here..."

Next, he found a tweet from the 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' actress Sarah Silverman, written in the same year, that says, “I don’t mean this in a hateful way but the new bachelorette’s a f****t.” Cannon lamented, “And I f*****g love Wreck it Ralph!!!”

Lastly, Cannon shared a 2012 tweet from Amy Schumer that reads, "Enjoy skyfall f*gs. I'm bout to get knee deep in Helen Hunt." He asked his followers, "I’m just saying... should we keep going???"

His intention seems to be focused on highlighting the hypocrisy of people trying to "cancel" Hart while these white, female comedians have done something similar and gotten away scot-free. Cannon's intention, however, also becomes muddled in people's response to these comedians' words, as many are arguing that no one who has shared any form of homophobic messages should have a platform at all.

One user also responded to Cannon saying, "While you auditing tweets, you need to audit yours!" to which he replied, "Nope!! You know I’ve been saying f****d up s**t since Twitter started! I don’t play that politically correct bulls**t! F**k politics!! Only Truth!"

Cannon might have weakened his point by calling political correctness "bulls**t" while trying to throw other comedians under the bus for their own political incorrectness, but TMZ found a tweet of his from 2012 that said, "If your best joke includes "gay" or "f****t" you should be kicked off Twitter this ain't the 3rd grade! #notaninsult #lackofcreativity."

Should all celebrities who have tweeted homophobic messages be cancelled, or is there room for forgiveness and growth—and are we being discriminatory with who is allowed the privilege of forgiveness? In any case, the Academy should probably incorporate a full social media audit into their host selection process.
