FASHION Flint

Since the Flint Water Crisis began in 2014, residents of the Michigan town have not had access to clean flowing water. To supply residents, the state spends over $22,000 on water bottles, resulting in an extreme accumulation of plastic waste.

As a way to both recycle and draw further attention to the ongoing crisis, designer Tracy Resse has turned plastic into fashion. To create the Flint Fit collection, she collected 90,000 empty water bottles and produced over 70 individual pieces from the textiles they were compressed into.

"For me, the design process always starts with textiles,” Reese said in a press release. “So designing into options that Unifi was able to create from the Flint water bottles was central to the concept. I really wanted to showcase the most interesting properties of each fabric.”

Each piece reflects Flint in some way. From rainwear that is inspired by industrial style, to a color palette that suits the Michigan environment. A fashion show of the project was held at the Queens Museum in New York City on April 8.
