FASHION Spanx

The founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, is officially the youngest, female, self-made billionaire in the world. In 1998, Blakely started the undergarment company with the mission of making underwear that helps shape female bodies to look thinner and smooth under tight-fitting clothing.

The idea for the revolutionary panties came to Blakely when she was in the bathroom. According to NowThis, the designer and entrepreneur couldn't find the right underwear to wear with cream-colored dress pants, so she just cut her hosiery and made makeshift Spanx.

"When I cut the feet out of my own control-top pantyhose, the lightbulb went off, and then I started pursuing the idea," Blakely said, according to NowThis.

Blakely originally pitched the idea to the department store Neiman Marcus. To convince the executives just how revolutionary Spanx were, she took the woman to the bathroom to show her the before and after effect of the undergarments. "So I said, you know what Diane, will you come to the bathroom?" Blakely said of the initial pitch.

After Spanx was launched, the body conforming underwear became an immediate sensation and Blakely was well on her way to design fame and immense financial success.
