FOOD Flavor tripping

Lemons taste sweet and hot sauce tastes mild—these are the effects of flavor tripping. Though the name may sound like an illegal high, flavor tripping is what happens to your taste buds when you eat a harmless, concentrated berry.

The fruit of the Synsepalum Dulcificum plant, mainly found in west Africa, has been used for centuries to alter the taste of certain foods. Often referred to as "miracle berries," this potent fruit contains a protein that will temporarily numb your taste buds. The result is that foods that are ordinarily sour, bitter, or savory, end up tasting sweet.

The latest fad is having "flavor tripping parties," where guests eat the berry, or condensed pill forms of it, and try different foods to find the most extreme results. The most popular are lemons, chili peppers, and beer.

You can buy your own "miracle berries" here, and experience the tastes of your favorite foods transforming.
