The future of pasta is here, and it looks just as good as it tastes. Barilla, the world's largest pasta manufacturer, has a competition that asks contestants to design a new innovative shape for pasta, which they will then create using 3D printing technology.

Some of the top designs out of the 1,300 entries included a pineapple, hollow moon-shaped pasta, and a design that blooms into a rose when boiled.

“It’s something you can’t really imagine,” says Jacqueline Delgado, the business manager of Barilla’s food innovation company said, according to Saveur. “There are so many flavors and shapes that you don't realize you are eating pasta. It's hard to explain in words.”

While it may be hard to imagine, the process behind 3D-printed pasta comes to life in only a matter of minutes. Building the pieces layer by layer, the machine can stream dough along the X, Y, and Z axes through a small nozzle.

The next time you see pasta on the shelves, you may not even recognize it!
