FOOD Rhode island

America's smallest state is undergoing big changes when it comes to food.

Providence, Rhode Island is situated on Narragansett Bay in New England. Historically known for its prominent Italian population, the dining options in Providence have always brought to mind fresh pasta and even fresher seafood.

However, being hungry in Providence can now take you on a culinary trip around the world. With Chinese hot pots, Korean fried chicken, and Thai noodle shops in abundance, this small New England city is putting itself on the map in a delicious way.

Providence is home to three internationally renowned universities: Brown, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Johnson & Wales. As with many college towns in America, first comes students, then comes businesses. Over the last decade, the international populations of these major schools have increased dramatically. Mic.com reported that the Providence area has seen an influx of students from China, Saudi Arabia, India, South Korea, and Nepal, and the dining scene reflects that.

Johnson & Wales has quickly made a name for itself as a culinary institute for budding chefs. One of the most popular clubs on campus is called Cooking Asia, which was started by students from South Korea. “Its membership has grown across cultures and it is one of the most active clubs on campus,” said Miriam Weinstein, the school's director of communications.

Many graduates are then taking their talents and channeling them back into the local area. Jahunger, a traditional Uyghur restaurant that is thriving in the college town is a perfect example of this culinary revolution. “I think Providence is a foodie town, people are open-minded to try new things and we’re located near Brown, so we get a lot of young professionals and college students,” Subat Dilmurat, a graduate of Johnson & Wales and the owner of Jahunger, said.

So next time you're visiting Rhode Island, take your stomach on a trip around the world by exploring the Asian cuisine of Providence.
