In recent years there have been outcries in the nutrition community over complications that dairy causes to your digestive tract. The sales of dairy alternatives have skyrocketed in the process, which spells trouble for the environment.

The massive drought in California can be categorized as an environmental crisis, and almonds aren’t helping. According to Mother Jones, 99% of almonds consumed in the United States come from California and a single almond takes 1.1 gallons of water to produce.

Rice milk is not exempt either. According to The Culture-ist, it takes roughly 122 gallons of water to grow the amount of rice needed for one gallon of rice milk!

Coconut milk has a relatively low environmental impact, but it has fewer vitamins than cow’s milk, and more fat.

A 2011 study conducted by the Institute for Water Education found that soy milk is the most ecologically sound alternative to dairy milk. To produce a gallon of soy milk it takes roughly 28% of the water required to produce cow’s milk. Score! Plus it’s high in protein and vitamins!

There you have it, folks. The next time you pass by the dairy aisle at the grocery store you can ask yourself, “Got soy?”
