FOOD Apples

For apple fans everywhere, there is a new fruit on the scene and it may just change your life. Dubbed the Opal, lovers of this apple claim it's completely non-browning while being GMO-free and natural. Interested?

The Opal was created by cross-breeding the Topaz apple and the Golden Delicious. Paul Esvelt, the harvest manager at Broetje Orchards, told Mic that the miracle Opal apple resulted from finding the exact right balance of polyphenol oxidase, the chemical agent that causes browning.

“Just through sheer luck in the breeding process, the Opal actually has a low rate of that particular chemical. It still does brown eventually but it browns really slowly,” Esvelt said.

The Opal is crisp, tart in flavor, and boasts being exceptionally firm. Plus, its bright yellow color will catch the eye of supermarket shoppers everywhere.

So, will you eat your Opal plain, or bake it in your favorite apple recipe? Perhaps both!

“It’s fantastic because it retains the integrity of the apple pieces in [pie],” Esvelt said. “If you like the apple texture in your baked goods, it does a good job at that — you get a smooth consistency.”

Are you craving an Opal apple now?
