There are undoubtedly many positive things to say about avocados. The peculiar little fruits can have enormous beneficial components such as fiber, antioxidants, and heart-healthy fatty acids, to name just a few.

However, much like other nutritional problems in the United States, it boils down to the issue of portion sizing. Please try to contain your shock.

The California Avocado Commission announced that the actual portion size for an avocado is 1/3. This may not sound like much, but the previously serving size set by the Food and Drug Administration was a mere 1/5 of an avocado.

According to Body and Soul, it has been recommended by numerous nutritionists to eat no more than half an avocado a day if you are trying to lose weight. Unless you are extremely active and or you are trying to gain weight, eating an entire avocado in one day may be detrimental to weight loss.

Most Americans are not exercising enough each day to combat the level of fat an avocado contains, even if it’s healthy fat. The moral of the story is to enjoy your guacamole, but less is more.
