HEALTH Mental health

Antidepressant medications typically come with a laundry list of side effects such as weight gain, fatigue, and various sexual dysfunctions. What if there was a healthy and natural way to stabilize your mood that you can find in your own kitchen?

There are two spices that in scientific studies have been proven to have the same impact on depression as popular drugs. Prescription drug addiction is currently the top substance abuse issue plaguing the United States, so this news could not come at a better time.

In a study done by the medical journal Phytotherapy Research, it was found that curcumin, a main ingredient in the Indian spice turmeric, improved depression severity among patients just as well as the prescription drug Fluoxetine.

The Middle Eastern spice saffron has also proven to be an effective natural mood booster. According to University Health News, there was a study conducted in which both the group taking Prozac and saffron showed the exact same amount of improvement with their depression symptoms.

To take these spices in place of antidepressants, you can take curcumin in the form of a tablet and saffron in an extract form. If you want to do it the good old fashion way, then you can just sprinkle it into your dinner.
