Scientists have announced a groundbreaking new invention. The new tech measures alcohol levels by using a microchip injected under the skin. The chip was developed by engineers at the University of San Diego with the intention of monitoring alcohol or opiates in the body over a long period of time. It's not for those who want to keep calm on a Friday night. Instead, it is a method of helping patients monitor their addictions.

The chip is pretty tiny, at just one cubic millimeter. Once injected under the skin, the chip sends info to a sensor. Engineering professor Drew Hall explained the purpose in a press release. “The ultimate goal of this work is to develop a routine, unobtrusive alcohol and drug monitoring device for patients in substance abuse treatment programs,” he said. The device is at the prototype stage right now, yet could soon replace blood tests to monitor alcohol and opiate addiction.
