The 15 most natural disaster-prone states in America - With the plethora of disastrous natural events that have occurred in the last several years, Americans are understandably on edge. The recent volcanic eruption in Hawaii and the tornadoes ripping through the Northeast recently have only increased the nation's anxiety. Using a list from World Atlas, here are the top 15 states that are in a natural disaster danger zone. Check out this gallery to see how safe your state really is.

15. Mississippi - The Magnolia State has experienced at least 68 natural disasters since 1953. Since the Great Galveston Hurricane demolished the state in 1900, cataclysmic events have not ceased.

15. Mississippi - This southern state is more vulnerable to tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding. The Mississippi coast has most recently been devastated by Hurricane Issac in 2012.

14. Missouri - According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the state has been issued over 35 federal major disaster declarations since 1990.

14. Missouri - The geography of the Show-Me State leaves Missourians particularly at risk for tornadoes, flooding, and ice storms. The worst storm to strike in Missouri was the Tri-State Tornado of 1925.

13. Arkansas - The Land of Opportunity has been hit with 70 natural disasters since 1953. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 killed over 100 Arkansas citizens, according to Metro Disaster Specialists.

12. Oregon - In the last century, Oregon has experienced earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, and even volcanic eruptions.

12. Oregon - This northwest state has experienced 73 natural disasters since 1953. Oregon's flash floods are legendary. The Heppner flood of 1903 killed nearly 250 people, according to the Oregon Encyclopedia.

11. Kentucky - Since 1953, Kentucky has been struck with 74 disastrous storms. Residents of the Bluegrass State are in danger of flooding, tornadoes, lightning, and blizzards.

11. Kentucky - Brandenburg, KY, was struck with an F5 tornado on April 3, 1974, which killed 31 and injured 150.

10. Louisiana - Hurricane Katrina has been one of the most infamous tropical storms in American history. The property damage from this storm was estimated to be over $120 billion and more than 1,800 people died.

10. Louisiana - The Creole State has been shaken by 75 natural disasters since 1953. Louisiana is also in the danger zone for floods and tornadoes.

9. New Mexico - This southwestern state has undergone numerous emergency events in the last several years. These storms include wildfires, drought, flooding, and tornadoes.

9. New Mexico - The state is particularly susceptible to devastating wildfires due to its arid climate and desert landscape. New Mexico has experienced 79 natural disasters since 1953.

8. Alabama - In 2011, the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas were torn apart by a disastrous tornado which left behind billions of dollars in damage and killed 64 people.

7. Colorado - Though the Rocky Mountains have had their fair share of blizzards and hail storms, the most common natural disaster in Colorado by far is wildfires.

7. Colorado - The state also deals with flash floods and even an occasional earthquake or tornado. Colorado has had 80 devastating natural events since 1953.

6. New York - According to CNN, the blizzard bomb that took over New York City in March of 2018 brought over 30 in of snow. That amount of cumulative snow hasn't been seen in NYC in 130 years!

6. New York - Though New York is in particular danger of massive snow storms, they also have to watch out for floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Since 1953, this state has seen 93 destructive weather events.

5. Florida - The Sunshine State has declared a state of emergency a shocking 65 times in the last 50 years, according to NBC News. Hurricanes have frequented Florida's coastline at an alarming rate in recent years.

5. Florida - Other than hurricanes, this southern state also has to deal with wildfires, tornadoes, and floods. Since 1953, Florida has suffered from 122 natural disasters.

4. Washington - The Evergreen State experiences an array of cataclysmic weather events on a regular basis. 1,000 earthquakes shake this state every year, according to the Washington State Military Department.

4. Washington - Flooding causes the most damage out of all natural hazards in the state. In 2015, Washington had the biggest wildfire in its history that spread over 1,600 sq mi. There have been 132 destructive natural disasters here since 1953.

3. Oklahoma - In the center of Tornado Alley, Oklahoma has been hit by over 3,500 tornadoes between 1950 and 2014. The infamous 1947 Woodward tornado killed over 100 people and injured hundreds more, according to the National Weather Service.

3. Oklahoma - Who can forget the 1930s Dust Bowl? Other than droughts and tornadoes, Oklahoma is also prone to floods. Since 1953, this state has dealt with 167 catastrophic natural disasters.

2. California - The devastating wildfires that tore through northern and southern California in the summer of 2017 shocked the nation. Over 1,381,405 acres were burned in total and it cost over $13 billion in damages.

2. California - Situated on the San Andreas Fault, California is also highly vulnerable to earthquakes as well. In total, the Golden State has dealt with a staggering 250 devastating natural disasters since 1953.

1. Texas - When it comes to catastrophic weather events, Texas has plenty to choose from. The nation was shocked by the widespread destruction after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, causing nearly $125 billion worth of damage.
