Professional basketball is making headlines as both NBA Championship finalists, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, announced that they will not celebrate the victory at the White House. However the winners of the WNBA Championship, the Minnesota Lynx, were not even extended the offer.

“It’s hard not to think that gender is playing a role here because of the consistency with which men’s teams are being invited and celebrated,” Coach Cheryl Reeve said, according to the Washington Examiner. “I think it reflects the priorities of this particular administration.”

It is tradition for major professional and collegiate sporting teams to be invited to the White House to celebrate their athletic achievement. The Lynx, who have a record dotted with championships, received invitations immediately following their 2011, 2013 and 2015 wins.

“People sort of make an assumption that we wouldn’t go to the White House, and I don’t think that’s fair,” Reeve said. “It’s disappointing. For us, it sort of went with the territory after you win a championship. President Obama sort of spoiled us in terms of establishing this expectation to be recognized.”

Though the Minnesota Lynx will not be visiting the White House, the team will still head to Washington, D.C. to host a charitable event.
