When books are your business, there is good chance you have a few stories up your sleeve. Top publishing giants convened in New York City for the BookExpo. Markus Dohle from Penguin Random House, Carolyn Reidy from Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan CEO John Sargent were present to discuss their career history, top novels, and the present day state of print.

One highlight of the conference was when the moderator, Maria A. Pallante from the Association of American Publishers, asked the CEOs to name the top titles that they are most proud of.

According to reports from Quartzy, Sargent chose the 1989 children's book, 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.' “I was a young guy and a couple of us really busted our ass to make the book work,” he said. “It’s been all these years later and it’s still in stock everywhere you go, and kids still learn to read from it.”

Reidy chose 'Angela's Ashes,' the 1996 Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir. “It was an Irish book, and–this was the common belief at the time—the Irish don’t buy books about themselves,” Reidy said. “It was too much money. But we had 100 pages of the book—it was so glorious, the writing, the communication between the child narrator and the adult writer and the reader was just so phenomenal. So we bought it anyway.”

Dohle explained that his life in publishing has been noted and bookmarked by the titles that impacted political discourse. As Penguin Random House is publishing the forthcoming memoir from Michele Obama titled 'Becoming,' Dohle looks forward to the November release of this influential book.
