These accessories can soothe anxiety
Check out fidget jewelry
Lisa Capannelli, who operates an Etsy shop called Renascent Studios, talked to Mic.com about how fidget jewelry has helped her cope with her own panic attacks and anxiety. She explained that the accessories give her, “A sense of calm,” Capannelli said. “A sense of focus. A sense of distraction too. I need to do something with my hands. When you’re talking to somebody, for me, anxiety-wise, it helps to have my mind think about the jewelry and moving the beads rather than other invasive thoughts.”
The theory behind fidget jewelry is that by playing with something repetitively, the fidgeting distracts the part of your brain that could be full of negative thoughts, thus letting you focus on your surroundings.
Cynthia Kim started the online retailer Stimtastic, which sells accessories for people who suffer from repeat physical actions due to autism. “Having an item that I can wear means that I always have a discreet means of stimming close at hand,” Kim told Mic.com. “I can’t realistically bust out a Rubik’s cube in a professional setting or at a nice restaurant, but I can usually put my hands in my lap and covertly turn a spinner ring. That little bit of stimming helps me stay focused on the people I’m with and cope with whatever sensory overload I might be experiencing.”
When it comes to anxiety or other nervous disorders, something as simple as fidget jewelry could have significant impact, and be a fashion statement along the way.
