LIFESTYLE Millennials

When it comes to restaurant dining in America, tipping is essential. But for younger customers, leaving the obligatory 20% is somewhat of a disregarded concept. A new survey from CreditCards.com found that millennials are the worst tippers in America. So, why are young people becoming increasingly stingy?

Perhaps it is because they can. Many millennials believe in the idea that tips should be automatically included in the bill rather than something that is left up to choice. The report suggests that, "Philosophically, young adults are the most likely to say they would prefer to do away with tips and have the service charge included in restaurant food prices."

CreditCards.com senior industry analyst Matt Schulz explained that “Tipping at sit-down restaurants has always been the standard in the U.S., but that’s not necessarily the case in other countries,” he said.

Perhaps more restaurants should take a page from establishments abroad and include a service charge. We’re seeing younger adults tipping less, and even showing a greater preference toward eliminating tipping altogether, even if it means paying more on the bill,” Schulz said.

The survey was conducted on 1,000 adults aged 18 to 37.
