It is a misconception that people with darker skin do not need to wear sunscreen. As the threat of skin cancer becomes more and more prominent, everyone needs to be protected when heading to the beach this summer.

"It’s important to know that dark-skinned people can get skin cancer, too," Dr. Fran E. Cook-Bolden, dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and director at Skin Specialty Dermatology, told Bustle. "Persons with skin of color often dismiss and, unfortunately, are often dismissed by their general physicians in terms of risk. Although the risk is significantly higher in those with very light and white skin, the incidents in skin of color often have poorer outcomes due to failure to diagnose and late diagnosis."

In addition to the false theories that people of color do not need sunscreen, most brands only come in thick, white lotion, that can often make black skin look gray. Dr. Cook-Bolden recommends brands that go on clear and have strong protection.

"My favorites are EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light SPF 60, and Neutrogena Ultrasheer Face & Body Stick SPF 70," she said.

In order to stay safe this summer, finding the right sunscreen to keep on hand is essential.
