Certain words tick people off - A Marist Poll surveyed 938 US residents 18 and older to figure out which words peeved them most, and here are the results.

“Whatever” - Nearly half of Americans, at 47%, said they find “whatever” most annoying. Like, yeah, so, whatever.

“You know” - A quarter reported that they find the use of “you know” most grating. Apparently Americans don't know!

Texting while driving - This incredibly dangerous activity rightly received an 8.9 score, the highest of all.

Able-bodied drivers parking in handicapped spaces - Bad karma is slowly making its way to these people, and Americans ranked it at an 8.7.

Tailgaters - Back off, Buster! Americans gave this annoying road behavior an 8.4.

Drivers who cut you off - The greatest source of instant road rage—no, road fury. It received an 8.3.

Speeding and swerving in and out of traffic - Trailed by a wave of honks and a rank of 8.2.

Taking up two parking spaces - All you can do is stare angrily at the spot your car can’t fit into! This poor parking skill received a 7.7.

Talking on a cell phone while driving - It's especially annoying when they're sitting at a green light on their phone. This dangerous habit received a 7.6.

Not using turn signals - Nobody is clairvoyant enough to predict that you’re going to swerve over, and this annoying habit gets a 7.5.

Social media exasperations - Besides the constant changes in where buttons are and the whole thing about selling your personal information, Statista found what US internet users find the most annoying online. Here are the results.

Excessive complainers - The study found 55% of people across all demographics were most annoyed with excessive complainers online.

Excessive braggers - It was split nearly down the middle with excessive braggers on social media. You know the ones, unable to refrain from “checking in” at airports.

Online shopping woes - Statista also did a study on the pet peeves of American online shoppers to see which pet peeves they found the most obnoxious, and here are the results.

Shipping costs - You’ve spent all that time and effort squeezing your cart into your budget only to be met with atrocious shipping costs, and 66% of Americans despise that feeling most.

Getting something that looks completely different - Awaiting your package only to find that it looks nothing like it did online annoys 38% of Americans most.

Getting put on a mailing list after making a purchase - You once purchased a single item and now you’re deleting spam for the rest of your life. Amazingly only 16% of Americans are most annoyed post-purchase.

Indefinite stays - You don’t want to walk the line between guest and freeloader. American ranked this pet peeve at 4.3.

Snooping - Okay, so maybe you’ve done it, but you’d hate if someone did it to you! This very bad habit is ranked at 4.3.

Showing up unannounced - Surprise! Feed me, lend me towels and sheets, and let me invade your space! Yup, this one got a 4.1.

Bringing an additional guest - Surprise again! Do all of that but twice as much. Americans gave this a 4.0.

Making a mess in common areas - Including never organizing their sleeping area, and leaving their dirty sheets on the bed when they leave. Making a mess earned a 3.9.

Smoking inside - Smoking in the house is a serious faux pas and was ranked 3.8 on the pet peeve scale.

Not following the house rules - “My house, my rules,” your parents once told you, and the same applies when you stay at someone else’s house. This ranks at 3.8.
