As the magical season of holly jolly spirit and steaming sweet drinks approaches, there comes some not so celebratory pimples that can dot your complexion like ornaments on a tree.

The winter brings many new problems for people who suffer from acne but fear not, there are easy ways to combat the season's harsh effects.

One reason your skin tends to act up in cold weather is that it gets dry. Cold outside air has significantly less moisture than warm or hot air, and harsh winds strip your skin of its natural surface lipids, which hold in moisture and keep out dirt. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, when your skin is dry it will secrete an oil called sebum which helps with the moisture issue, but can easily clog your pores and create breakouts.

Your forehead, nose, and chin—the "T-Zone"—contain more of these sebum-producing glands than almost any other part of your body, which is why they most often host those annoying red bumps. So how do you protect yourself against winter's frigid dryness?

Ellen Marmur, M.D., a Dove dermatologist, says, “The number one way to avoid dry skin is by upping your moisturization protection." Choosing oil-free moisturizers and applying them to damp skin—immediately you get out of the shower—can lock in moisture and prevent your skin from producing too much sebum. Simple things like covering your face with a scarf when you step outside can also do wonders.

Another thing to note is that the shock of cold weather can cause inflammation, which is a major factor in acne formation. Using gentle skin cleansers and avoiding all exfoliating scrubs is a simple way to ease your skin's winter woes.

Lastly, and perhaps one of the most difficult things to achieve, is to not get stressed out. The holidays can sometimes be the sole source for stress pimples, so be sure to make time for yourself, exercise, and get enough rest.
