LIFESTYLE Winter

Ever wonder why noses run during the winter? As annoying (and gross) as it is, it is actually your body working to keep your lungs from freezing! When the body senses cold air, it stimulates warm blood flow and an influx of mucus that warms inhaled chilly air. Up to 90% of people experience this during frigid temperatures.

Another unfortunate result of low temperatures is chapped, cracked lips. The lips are a sensitive and exposed area of the body which never do too well under harsh conditions, sadly. With cold air comes less humidity which dries out the lips. This is also why many people have the urge to hydrate them by constantly licking them. But saliva only worsens chapped lips. Instead, try a simple, fragrance-free lip balm for a protective, hydrating barrier.

If you are ever standing in freezing, gusty winds, you may notice your eyes fill with tears. Amazingly, this is also your body's natural reaction to protect you from getting super dry eyeballs!

As bothersome as these things may be, the human body is truly incredible and made in a way to protect us from the harshest of elements. So bundle up and don't forget to carry a few tissues with you!
