Women sleep better next to dogs than men, study says
Dog surpasses man, yet again
There are already a myriad of reasons to trade your man for a dog, but now there's research to back it up. A new study has found that women sleep better when they share their bed with a dog rather than a human.
Dr. Christy L. Hoffman, a professor in the Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation department at Canisius College (along with a team of researchers) collected survey data from 962 adult women in the United States to explore the relationships between pet ownership and human sleep. They found that 55% of participants shared their bed with at least one dog, 31% shared with at least one cat, and 57% of participants shared their bed with a human partner.
Though they admit that their findings "did not show a strong relationship between pet ownership status or bedsharing conditions and sleep quality as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index," they did find some rather interesting results.
Firstly, women who share their beds with a dog reported that their pets were less disruptive than their partners, meaning they had better, more restful sleep. They also said that sleeping with their dogs made them feel more comfortable and secure than sleeping with a human.

Don't hold out hope for other pets, however, as participants reported that bed-sleeping cats are just as disruptive as humans, and that cats provided less comfort and security than both dogs and humans. It was also found that dog owners had earlier bedtimes and wake times than individuals who only had cats.
Of course, the study was based on personal perception and individual variables—like the snoring of either human or dog—factor into each participant's responses, so getting a dog isn't necessarily going to solve your sleeping problems.
The jury is out on whether men sleep better with animals or partners, but at least women now have the research to back up their decision to kick their partners out of bed and cuddle up to their beloved pup.
