It's always when you have to be somewhere else, or when you're speaking to someone you're not really interested in, that you get tangled up in an endless conversation that traps you like a sticky web. There are plenty of ways you could end it, like telling them how much you don't care or by just walking away, but you probably don't want to seem like a rude and insensitive person.

Luckily for you, there are some clever and polite ways to gently eject yourself from a conversation without burning any bridges.

Ask for their information
By asking someone for their phone number or social media handle right before leaving, you give them the impression that you enjoyed your time together and wish to keep in touch. Whether you actually call or add them later is entirely up to you.

Blame the battery
If you’re calling or texting with someone, you can always claim that your battery is running out. Practically everyone will accept this excuse, though you'll have to go offline for a bit of time if you don’t want to get caught.

Proactive measures
Leaving all of a sudden can often give a negative impression, no matter how good your excuse is. By giving a heads up beforehand and saying you really have to leave in 10 minutes, you show them that you do enjoy their company while also signalling to them to wrap it up. If you end up staying a little longer than planned, they will feel especially interesting.

Ask them along
This is a very risky tactic if you don’t like someone, but asking someone if they want to join you shifts the decision from you to them. If they say no, you’re not really leaving them, but rather they’re leaving you. It becomes impossible for them to have any hard feelings towards you, even if you already know beforehand that they can’t accept your invitation.

Be honest
We often overthink how someone will react to our actions. If you want people to be honest with you, you should lead by example and be honest with them. So feel free to tell them what’s really going on.

Believe it or not, you're actually allowed to leave a conversation without giving a specific reason. If people can’t accept that your life doesn’t revolve around them, you probably shouldn’t be around them in the first place. Just don't be rude about it!
