Revealing images show effect of ocean pollution on wildlife - This year's World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8, and its focus on the effect of plastic pollution in the world's oceans couldn't have come at a better time.

New environmental policies and shocking stories from media across the globe have been making us increasingly aware of the effect that plastic waste is having on the world's oceans, and in particular the creatures that live in them.

When we aren't faced with a physical problem right in front of us, however, it is hard to understand just how serious the reality is.

The plastic problem - According to Getty, roughly eight million metric tons of plastic enter the world's oceans each year.

The plastic problem - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) predicts that the amount of plastic in the sea will overtake that of fish by 2050, if the current rates of pollution continue.

Global issue - Rwanda was early to the war on plastic. It actually banned plastic bags back in 2008.

Global issue - In 2018, the UK announced plans to ban plastic bags, stirrers, and Q-tips.

Global issue - France announced a total ban on plastic cutlery, plates, and cups in 2016, to be effective as of 2020. Kenya also banned plastic bags in 2017, according to Global Citizen.

Thailand - On June 1, 2018, a pilot whale died after being found struggling for its life in a canal in Thailand. The animal was found to have 80 plastic bags in its stomach.
