In 2015, news of the NAACP chapter president who turned out to be white went viral. Rachel Dolezal is a former civil rights activist and African studies professor who lied about her heritage and about alleged hate crimes she experienced to lead the equal rights organization in Spokane, WA.
When Dolezal was outed and subsequently removed from her position as president, she appeared on talk shows, wrote books, and even became the subject of an SNL skit that told her story. In April of this year, a documentary entitled 'The Rachel Divide' is coming to Netflix.
The film is directed by Laura Brownson and will center on the backlash Dolezal received after the scandal, and the impact on her family.
“In making the film, I came to a deeper understanding of the raw nerve that Rachel hits in our society, but I also learned that her motivations to identify as she does are far more complicated than most realize,” Brownson said, according to Nylon. “Regardless of how people feel about Rachel, I hope the film will challenge audiences to think more deeply about race and identity in America.”
'The Rachel Divide' will be available for streaming on April 27.
