MOVIES Headless Women
From romantic comedies to classical dramas, movie posters through the years have been cutting out the heads of women to entice the audience and sell tickets.
As a way to call blatant attention to decapitation in the entertainment industry, Marcia Belsky started The Headless Women of Hollywood Project. By compiling images of movie posters, book covers, and TV show promotions, Belsky is showing just how often the female body is chopped by the media.
"I'm talking about objectified women there for the purpose exclusively of being looked at by men," Belsky told AJ+. "Once someone points the trope out to you, you start to see it. Scrolling through all of them all at once really made people react."
Belsky started the project in 2016 and accepts submissions in addition to her research. While some have had a negative response to her findings, most are actually shocked by how prevalent the headless woman is. "This is a way that I can visibly demonstrate these just subtle and accepted ways that we dehumanize women," Belsky said.
