Amy Schumer's most recent film debut, 'I Feel Pretty,' has been met with mixed reviews and some harsh critiques. As a stand-up comedian and actor with a distinct style and a defined voice, Schumer's confidence isn't easily shaken.

"I’ve been up and down my whole life. I think I have a really good baseline now where I am proud of myself, but that takes a lot of work," Schumer told Fast Company about the motivation behind 'I Feel Pretty.' "That took therapy and letting go of the past and just realizing kind of who I am. And what makes somebody who they are," she said.

The film follows Schumer's character, Renee, as she struggles with body image and self-confidence. After suffering a head injury, Renee awakens with an entirely altered self-image. A multitude of online commentators thought this plotline to be "problematic" or "unfeminist," though Schumer believes it reflected the narrative of her own self-confidence journey. "Some people took issue with that. I think rewiring yourself to like yourself is a lot of work and anyone who feels like this is unrealistic hasn’t done that yet," Schumer said.

You can find out for yourself by going to see 'I Feel Pretty,' which is currently in theaters.
