An Amy Winehouse demo has surfaced after 17 years. Canadian musician and producer Gil Cang uploaded the demo, titled ‘My Own Way’, to YouTube. Cang produced the track back in September 2001, in an attempt to get the attention of record labels. The musician sat down with the Camden New Journal for more information on the track. “It was at a particularly dire time in the pop world,” Cang explained “Amy came in to see us, opened her mouth and just blew us all away”.
‘My Own Way’ was recorded by Amy Winehouse when she was just 17 years old. The track was written by Gil Cang and composer James MacMillan. The demo’s release is especially surprising, considering that all of Winehouse’s demos were destroyed in 2015. The decision to delete the demos was made by Universal exec David Joseph. Speaking with Billboard, Joseph explained that “taking a stem or a vocal is not something that would ever happen on my watch”.
