TRAVEL Russia

Interested in turning into a human popsicle? Oymyakon, located in the Yakutia region of Russia, has temperatures that dip down to -72.4ºF, which officially broke the public thermometer.

When temperatures get this low, your eyelashes actually freeze. It's the kind of cold that hurts your bones. Proudly referred to as "The Pole of the Cold," Oymyakon has a population of about 500 people. In the dead of winter, a day in Oymyakon only lasts for two hours.

Despite the cold, Oymyakonians still have a good time. Instagram photos have been surfacing of locals taking selfies with their white, icy eyelashes. Another stunning winter image was taken by Petr Chugunov, a photographer from Yakutsk. He photographed a ballerina posed in the snow-covered street.  “I really did take pictures of the ballerina outside in minus 41, it is not Photoshopped,” he told The Siberian Times. “It was my idea, actually it is my project, to photograph ballerinas on the city streets,” Chugunov said.

The frosty makeup and otherworldly backdrops are now making Oymyakon a tourist destination—but just for the bravest of souls.
