TRAVEL Volcanoes

Many are panicking that the recent volcanic eruptions mark the end of the world. Kilauea volcano erupted in Hawaii just yesterday, causing the evacuation of around 1,700 people.

Though recent volcanic eruptions have been occurring recently at home and abroad, a large number of the world’s active volcanoes reside in the United States—though you may be surprised at exactly where.

Alaska isn't part of the "Ring of Fire" for no good reason. Out of the 800 active volcanoes in the world, 40 are in Alaska, according to the National Park Service. While this might not sound like much, Alaska is home to 80% of the volcanoes in the United States. The state has an eruption nearly every year.

According to the US Geological Survey, the Pacific Ring of Fire accounts for nearly 90% of the world’s earthquakes, and most of the world’s volcanic eruptions. Roughly 10% of the eruptions that have historically occurred in this area happened in Alaska.

On June 7, 2017, the Bogoslof Volcano in Alaska erupted, sending a plume of smoke 30,000 ft into the air, according to the Seattle Times.

A much more conspicuous example, Hawaii has some notable volcanic activity of its own. According to the American Geosciences Institute, the Kilauea volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with an eruption almost every consecutive year since 1983.

The lava monster isn’t just a Moana character anymore. While volcanoes are nothing new, the fear of eruptions among scientists and citizens alike is high, and it’s easy to see why.
