Top 7 cultural mistakes tourists make in Morocco
Travel with ease
1. Don't disrespect Islam
Local customs are very important in Morocco. With over 90% of the country's population following Islam, respecting the religion while visiting is expected. A couple key rules to remember are to avoid certain mosques and shrines that non-Muslims are forbidden from entering and to wear modest clothing while in public.
2. Don't eat with your left hand
Sorry, lefties! It is a cultural practice to never use your left hand while eating because it is considered dirty. Since many meals in Morocco are eaten with your hands, remember to always use your right hand.
3. Don't expect everyone to speak English
Like many countries around the world, English is not the dominant language, so don't be surprised when you get there! While visiting major cities such as Marrakesh and Fez, there will likely be many people who can speak some English, it is always good to learn a few words and niceties before you go.
4. Don't expect Casablanca to be exactly like the movie
The iconic film 'Casablanca' was shot in Hollywood not Morocco, so don't expect the bustling city to look exactly like the black-and-white 1943 film.
5. Don't assume fez hats come from the city of Fez
If you were headed to the city of Fez just to buy a round, red hat with a black tassel on top, think again. The hats and the city have zero relation to each other.
6. Don't forget to haggle in the souks
Shopping in the beautiful and bustling open-air markets is one of the best parts about traveling to Morocco. You can get lost in the rows of hand-sewn rugs and find treasure in the gorgeous gold jewelry! However, it is important to remember that haggling is a tradition in Morrocan trade. Vendors will start with an inflated price, so knowing how to barter is key.
7. Don't expect to eat couscous for every meal
Couscous is the national dish of Morroco and it is incredibly delicious! However, it is customary to only eat couscous on Fridays, which is the Islamic holy day.
