Chinese-American actor Jimmy O. Yang, who plays Jian-Yang in the popular HBO series 'Silicon Valley,' has created a guidebook for immigrants. Titled 'How to American: An Immigrant’s Guide to Disappointing Your Parents,' this book is gaining praise for the accurate portrayal of immigrants in America dealing with the trials and tribulations of assimilation.

“In America, people will always tell me, ‘Money can’t buy happiness. Do what you love,’” Yang writes in the book. “In my Chinese family, my dad always tell me: ‘Pursuing your dreams is for losers. Doing what you love is how you become homeless.’”

As an actor, it is clear Yang did not follow his father's advice back then. But his story isn't that of anger or resentment, but one which discusses how culture and family often become the defining narrative in young immigrant's lives. "I had to disappoint them in order to pursue what I loved. That was the only way to have my Chinese turnip cake and eat an American apple pie too," Yang wrote.

Caught between who he appears to be and what his genuine passions are, Yang's story is relatable to nearly every reader.
